Professor Michael A. Cusumano has been named the new faculty co-director from the Sloan School of Management for the System Design and Management and Integrated Design and Management programs. Cusumano will succeed Steven Eppinger, who has served as the faculty co-director for management since 2010. Eppinger is the General Motors Leaders for Global Operations Professor and a Professor of Management Science and Innovation. He has served as deputy dean of the Sloan School of Management and co-director for the Leaders for Global Operations (formerly LFM) program.
Cusumano, who will officially begin the new role on July 1, 2022, is the SMR Distinguished Professor of Management and deputy dean at the Sloan School of Management. He specializes in strategy, product development, and entrepreneurship in computer software and digital platforms, as well as automobiles and consumer electronics. Cusumano previously held a joint appointment in the School of Engineering. He has served as thesis advisor for many IDM students and teaches the courses 15.358 Platform Strategy and Entrepreneurship and 15.904 Strategy and the CEO, which are popular choices for the program’s fellows. He holds a BA degree from Princeton and a PhD from Harvard.
“We are thrilled that Michael will be the new faculty codirector for management,” says Joan Rubin, executive director of SDM. “He has been one of the most active faculty collaborators with SDM, and we’re excited to work with him in a more direct role.”
System Design and Management is MIT’s joint degree in engineering and management, offered by the School of Engineering and the Sloan School of Management. Students take classes in both schools and complete theses under the supervision of faculty members. Faculty members from the School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management serve as co-directors for the degree program in its unique interdisciplinary position at MIT.
